STASH THE SUITCASE COLLECTIVE presents SYNERGY, draft 2.

Choreographed and performed by:
Kieron Jina and Joni Barnard.

Music: Yogin Sullaphen
Photographer: Lauren Mulligan
Stage manager: Negiste Johnson
Dramaturge: Gerard Bester
Mask Design: Roberto Pombo

Synergy:
The interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects.

Exploring the conflicts and connections between two opposing bodies, Synergy is a multi-layered journey that is unavoidably curious, playful and insistent.

Synergy marks an explosive collaboration between two young South African artists. In South Africa, we are acutely aware that we do not exist outside of our historical context. We are more aware that this context affords us the opportunity to live in one of the most dynamic and exciting countries in the world. This collaboration offers an alternative investigation of the complexities of sexual identity and desire within contemporary South African society.

Opposites attract. We will cooperate. We will collide. On the surface you see a meeting of opposites: tall/short, brown/white, male/female, hetero/homo, and gay/lesbian. Underneath, a fierce connection between two friends, two colleagues, a performance artist and a choreographer, an explosion of binaries that offers you an alternative reality, an alternative choice. Transformation is unleashed -- don't get left behind.

Performed on the Dance Umbrella Main Programme, Johannesburg, South Africa, 2013/14.
Commissioned by the Dance Umbrella, Dance Forum.
